Yangwang U8 takes centre stage at Jeddah International Motor Show

The Jeddah International Motor Show is a biennial event that has become a magnet for groundbreaking automotive designs and innovations. And this year doesn’t disappoint. A key highlight has been the first reveal of the impressive Yangwang U8 in Saudi Arabia. This luxury SUV, the flagship model of BYD’s new high-end brand Yangwang, is an imposing brute of a car, combining performance, gizmos and luxury in a compelling combination.

What is Yangwang?

Yangwang, a premium sub-brand under the umbrella of BYD, is one the latest endeavours by the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant to push the boundaries of automotive tech and capability. BYD is renowned for its pioneering work in electric vehicles and sustainable transportation solutions. The Yangwang U8, priced in China at approximately CNY 1.1 million (USD 150,400), marks the brand’s inaugural foray into the high-end SUV market, reflecting BYD’s commitment to innovation and excellence. Pricing and arrival dates for Saudi Arabia haven’t been announced yet.

Remarkable Features of the Yangwang U8

One of the standout features of the Yangwang U8 is its ability to perform a “tank turn” or all-terrain in-situ U-turn, allowing the vehicle to rotate 360 degrees on its axis. This functionality, made possible by the e⁴ Platform—a four-motor independent drive technology—is certainly a crowd-pleaser. But it also provides practical utility in tight spaces, like narrow city streets. The e⁴ Platform also enables precise control over the dynamics of all four wheels, ensuring stability even during a tyre blowout.

Not impressed? The U8 also boasts impressive off-road and amphibious capabilities. It’s not quite the James Bond Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me, which converts into a submarine.  However it is designed to handle extreme off-road adventures, with the ability to wade through deep water. This capability is facilitated by a robust electrical and mechanical system that is well-sealed against water ingress, allowing it to ford streams and shallow rivers safely. The U8 also features emergency floating capabilities, ensuring stability and control in water obstacles for up to 30 minutes.

Performance and Sustainability

The Yangwang U8 is powered by a plug-in hybrid system. This system offers an impressive Comprehensive Long Trip Capability (CLTC) range of up to 1,000 kilometers, ensuring peace of mind during both urban and off-road adventures. The vehicle packs a whopping 1,200 horsepower, enabling it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Weighing in at a plus sized 3,460Kg, this produces some serious momentum. It also aligns with global trends where electric and hybrid SUVs are increasingly sought after by consumers looking to balance luxury, extreme performance with reduced environmental impact.

An Exclusive Experience

In terms of aesthetics, the Yangwang U8 blends an imposing stature with sleek, futuristic design elements, embodying a sophisticated look that intends to be both modern and timeless. The design language, known as “Time Gate,” combines hardcore styling with futuristic elements, making the U8 a visual standout. The interior promises opulence, featuring high-quality materials such as Nappa leather and Sapele wood, along with state-of-the-art technology. The U8 Premium Edition’s symmetrical, dual-layered cockpit includes a 12.8-inch OLED Galaxy Curved Center Display, dual 23.6-inch longitudinal screens, and a Dynaudio Evidence Series high-end audio system with 22 speakers, enhancing comfort and connectivity.

Looking Forward

There is lots of hyperbole around new cars, but in the case of the Yangwang U8 it does seem justified. As a vehicle it is something rather special.

In China, BYD is planning to deliver the U8 to customers in 13 provincial-level regions in China, including Shanghai and Shenzhen, and has already opened several Yangwang direct-operated stores across major Chinese cities, with over 90 stores planned in 40 cities by the end of the year.

Given the queues of people seeking to have a look at the car at the Jeddah International Motor Show, it seems likely to be a big hit in the Kingdom too, when it eventually arrives.
