BYD takes top spot in global EV sales

BYD has achieved remarkable sales growth in 2023, registering a 62% increase and selling more than 3 million vehicles. This surge included approximately 1.6 million battery electric vehicles and 1.4 million plug-in hybrids.

BYD’s fourth quarter sales of 526,000 fully electric “new energy vehicles” exceeds Tesla’s sales of 484,000 cars in the same period. This officially makes BYD the biggest EV company in the world.

It’s important to note that the vast majority of these sales were in China.  Just 10% of BYD’s EVs were sold elsewhere in the world.

However, the company is expanding very rapidly and seems to be incredibly popular in new markets, such as the UAE.

Overall, BYD has sold more than 6 million electric vehicles worldwide.
