Chery’s international brand pairing used its user summit in China to reveal an adventure-styled crossover and set out plans for a larger-battery hybrid.
OMODA & JAECOO revealed the OMODA X crossover on 20 October at OMODA X NIGHT, part of its International User Summit in Wuhu, China. The company calls it the world’s first CROSS OFF-ROAD vehicle. In practice, it’s a crossover that mixes SUV practicality, outdoor kit and sporty styling.
Alongside the launch, OMODA & JAECOO said it has now sold more than 1.4 million vehicles worldwide in three and a half years. It passed one million cumulative sales in April, so the latest 400,000 took about six months.
What is the OMODA X?
The OMODA X sits below the OMODA 9 flagship and measures 4,650 mm long, 1,910 mm wide and 1,720 mm tall. A wide body, sculpted surfaces and lightning-shaped tail lights give it a sharper look than earlier OMODA models. According to the company, this mecha-inspired style will become the core design language for the next generation of OMODA cars.
Inside, the MECHA Command Cockpit pairs a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 13.2-inch central touchscreen. An X-shaped floating centre console sits between the front seats. Physical buttons stay for frequently used functions, such as air conditioning and driving modes.
How capable is it away from the road?
OMODA quotes 200 mm of ground clearance and a designed wading depth of more than 700 mm. The X can tow up to 1,800 kg and carry 75 kg on its roof. In addition, the cabin has 39 storage spaces for camping and outdoor gear.
OMODA hasn’t yet confirmed the powertrain, drive system, launch markets or prices. All the figures above are manufacturer claims, and the X’s place in the brand’s electrified range is still unclear.
What technology does it carry?
The SIAS voice assistant, short for Super Intelligent AI Space, responds to natural speech without a wake word. Meanwhile, X-MODE lets drivers build a personalised driving mode that adjusts vehicle settings and performance to suit them. An infrared thermal-imaging night-vision system can spot potential hazards up to 90 metres ahead, the company says. For passengers, in-car karaoke uses four separate sound pickup zones, so nobody needs a handheld microphone.
Owners from Indonesia, Brazil, South Africa and Poland also presented their own versions of the car through the OMODA X Co-Creation Project.
What is changing in OMODA & JAECOO’s hybrids?
Electrified models, covering hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric cars, now make up 81 per cent of OMODA & JAECOO sales. Next comes a hybrid system with a 5-kWh battery, which will appear first on the OMODA 7.
The company says the bigger battery supports a Super Quiet Mode, designed to feel more like an EV when starting, accelerating and cruising at speed. It also adds vehicle-to-load capability, supplying up to 2.2 kW to external appliances. Further functions cover resting in the car, security monitoring and scheduled activities.
“Soon we’ll be the world’s first to deliver the new 5-kWh HEV technology,” said Shawn Xu, CEO of OMODA & JAECOO International. “It’s the world’s only HEV with V2L function and supports multiple smart lifestyle modes.” Both firsts are the company’s own claims.
Can the cars park themselves?
At the summit’s Super Intelligent Experience Lab, held from 19 to 21 October, the company demonstrated Super Intelligent Valet Parking (SIVP) on the JAECOO 5, JAECOO 7 and OMODA 7. Tests covered automated pickup, parking in ultra-narrow bays and active obstacle avoidance. The cars followed planned routes to pickup points and adjusted their position to finish tight manoeuvres.
However, SIVP is an assisted-driving feature. Drivers must stay alert and ready to take over at all times. It also needs a stable network connection and works only in enclosed parking zones. According to OMODA & JAECOO, SIVP-equipped JAECOO 5 and JAECOO 7 models will start reaching customers soon.
How fast is the company growing?
OMODA & JAECOO expects to sell more than 800,000 vehicles in 2026, about 110 per cent more than last year. Europe now accounts for 48 per cent of global sales, two and a half years after the brands arrived there. The company sells through more than 1,700 showrooms in 79 markets. By 2027, it plans to be in 99 markets, including Japan, South Korea and Canada.
In September, UK registrations reached 22,296, a 6.37 per cent market share. The company says the JAECOO 7 was the country’s best-selling new car that month. Spain and Italy each added more than 4,000 registrations. Outside Europe, OMODA & JAECOO says monthly sales in Brazil have passed 6,500. It also ranks among Thailand’s top three car brands.
Its line-up will grow too, reaching 13 models over the next three years. In April, the company also set a target of one million annual sales by 2027.
