BYD has made the MENA region a strategic priority. In Morocco, the brand held around 32 per cent of the plug-in hybrid segment in 2024, the highest share of any single manufacturer in that category. Across the Gulf, it has partnered with three of the region’s largest automotive groups. In Egypt and Jordan, the hybrid range is also expanding. The lineup spans compact saloons, crossover SUVs, and a plug-in hybrid pickup truck, and it has a different composition in almost every market, with names that rarely match across borders. This guide covers the BYD plug-in hybrid offer country by country, for buyers and researchers across the region.
What hybrid technology does BYD use?
Every BYD plug-in hybrid in this guide uses the Super DM system, which stands for Dual Mode. The standard DM-i variant is electric-first: in everyday urban driving, the petrol engine rarely engages directly, and the car behaves more like a full EV. The fifth-generation DM-i 5.0 platform, used in newer models across the region, claims a manufacturer-stated thermal efficiency of up to 46 per cent and fuel consumption of 2.9 litres per 100 km under CLTC test conditions. The Shark 6 pickup uses the DMO variant, which adds twin-motor AWD and selectable off-road terrain modes. All models use BYD’s Blade Battery, a lithium iron phosphate pack designed to resist thermal runaway.
The BYD Shark 6
United Arab Emirates
BYD entered the UAE through Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility, with plug-in hybrid models going on sale in early 2024. Six PHEV models are available, covering a wider price range than any other brand in the segment locally. The Qin Plus DM-i starts at AED 82,900, making it the most affordable plug-in hybrid from any manufacturer currently sold in the country. The Sealion 5 DM-i, Seal 6 DM-i, Seal 7 DM-i, and Song Plus DM-i fill the mid-range, with the Song Plus remaining BYD’s highest-volume model in the market. The Shark 6 arrived in September 2025 as the first plug-in hybrid pickup truck on sale in the UAE, priced from AED 158,900. Showrooms operate in Dubai, Sharjah, Al Ain, and Ras Al Khaimah. Buyers in the UAE can compare BYD hybrids against the wider plug-in hybrid market at Drive EV, our partner comparison platform.
Saudi Arabia
Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility also operates BYD Saudi Arabia, and the KSA lineup closely mirrors the UAE. Six plug-in hybrid models are listed on the official website: the Qin Plus DM-i, Sealion 5 DM-i, Song Plus DM-i, Seal 7 DM-i, Shark 6, and Atto 8 (the last of which carries the DM-p performance powertrain rather than the efficiency-focused DM-i). DriveArabia confirms the Song Plus as the most popular BYD model in the Kingdom. Pricing differs from the UAE due to Saudi VAT at 15 per cent. The Seal 7 DM-i starts from approximately SAR 104,900, and the Song Plus DM-i from around SAR 114,000. The Shark 6 starts from SAR 165,900. Showrooms operate in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, with a growing service network across the Kingdom.
The BYD SONG Plus.
Kuwait
BYD is sold in Kuwait through Alghanim Automotive, one of the region’s most established dealership groups. The lineup includes the Qin Plus DM-i, Sealion 5 DM-i, Song Plus DM-i, Seal 7 DM-i, and Shark 6 alongside the brand’s battery-electric models. According to the official Alghanim pricing page, the Qin Plus starts from KWD 5,499, while both the Song Plus DM-i and Seal 7 DM-i start from KWD 8,999. The Song Plus is the most popular model by volume.
Oman
In Oman, BYD operates through Saud Bahwan Automotive, one of the largest automotive groups in the Sultanate. The plug-in hybrid range includes the Qin Plus DM-i, Song Plus DM-i, Seal 7 DM-i, Han DM-i, and Shark 6. The Han DM-i’s appearance in the Oman lineup makes it the only Gulf market outside Jordan where the flagship hybrid saloon is officially stocked. DriveArabia lists eight BYD models in Oman, with the Qin Plus starting from approximately OMR 9,090 and the Seal 7 DM-i from OMR 11,517 to OMR 13,613. The Song Plus is cited as BYD’s most popular model in the Sultanate.
Qatar
BYD Qatar is operated by Al-Mana Automotive, one of Qatar’s largest automotive groups, and carries the broadest confirmed PHEV lineup of any single market in this guide. Seven DM-series models are listed on the official site: the Qin Plus DM-i (from QAR 90,900), Sealion 5 DM-i, Seal 6 DM-i, Seal 7 DM-i (from QAR 104,667), Song Plus DM-i, Shark 6 DMO, and the Atto 8 DM-p. The Atto 8 DM-p uses BYD’s performance-oriented twin-motor DM-p powertrain rather than the efficiency-focused DM-i system and represents a distinct category within the hybrid range. Qatar has no VAT, which keeps prices lower than the equivalent models in Saudi Arabia.
The Qin Plus DM-i.
Bahrain
In Bahrain, BYD is distributed by Fakhro Motors, an established family-owned automotive group. The confirmed PHEV lineup includes the Qin Plus DM-i, Song Plus DM-i, Seal 7 DM-i, and Shark 6. DriveArabia lists the Qin Plus starting from BHD 9,090, with Bahrain having no VAT like Qatar. Bahrain and Qatar both sit outside the Al-Futtaim network, meaning dealer ownership experience and service coverage differ from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.
Jordan
BYD Jordan is operated by Mobility Solutions Trading Company, part of the Bustami and Saheb Group, which has held the distribution rights since 2023. The Jordan lineup offers one of the broadest PHEV selections in the region and includes models not sold elsewhere in the GCC. The Qin Plus DM-i and Song Plus DM-i (known here as the Seal U) are both available. The Tang DM-i, BYD’s seven-seat hybrid SUV, starts from JOD 34,900 and is not currently on sale in other markets covered in this guide. The Shark 6 is also confirmed for Jordan, priced at approximately JOD 16,000 upwards. The Sealion 07 DM-i is available through the Bustami and Saheb online store, with WLTP-rated electric range of up to 65 km.
Egypt
BYD has an official presence in Egypt through BYD Egypt, with the Sealion 6 DM-i listed as a confirmed plug-in hybrid model on the brand’s website alongside its battery-electric range. The Sealion 6 DM-i is the same vehicle as the Song Plus DM-i sold across the Gulf, adapted to the Sealion naming used in export markets. Egypt’s automotive market is sensitive to currency fluctuations and import duties, which push prices significantly higher in local terms than the nominal cost might suggest.
The Sealion 6 DM-i is listed by Egyptian dealers at approximately EGP 1,600,000 to EGP 1,800,000. Buyers should confirm current pricing and model availability directly with authorised dealers, as market conditions in Egypt change frequently.
The BYD ATTO 2 DM-i.
Morocco
Morocco is BYD’s most advanced North African market and is developing one of the most diverse PHEV lineups on the continent. The official importer is Auto Nejma, which distributes BYD from showrooms in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Oujda. Three plug-in hybrid models are confirmed for sale. The Seal U DM-i, equivalent to the Song Plus DM-i in Gulf markets, starts from approximately MAD 359,900. The Seal 5 DM-i is a compact hybrid saloon built on the fifth-generation DM-i 5.0 platform, offering a manufacturer-claimed electric range of up to 100 km and a combined range exceeding 1,000 km, with 0–100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. The Atto 2 DM-i is a compact hybrid crossover, 4.3 metres long with a 425-litre boot, carrying a 90 km electric range and a combined range of up to 1,000 km, from MAD 259,900.
One market analysis estimates BYD held around 32 per cent of Morocco’s plug-in hybrid segment in 2024, the highest share of any single brand in that category, reflecting how quickly it has displaced established European competitors since launching in 2023.
What buyers across the region need to know
Three points apply across every market. First, model names are inconsistent. The Song Plus DM-i (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain), the Seal U DM-i (Jordan, Morocco), and the Sealion 6 DM-i (Egypt) are the same underlying vehicle. Checking the official BYD website for your country will confirm local naming.
Second, warranty terms in the GCC generally follow the same structure: six years or 150,000 km on the vehicle and eight years or 200,000 km on the battery, though confirmation with your local dealer is advisable as terms may vary by market and model year.
Third, incentives for plug-in hybrids vary considerably by country. The UAE offers Salik tag registration fee waivers and parking benefits for NEV owners in Dubai, though eligibility for PHEVs specifically should be confirmed. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Oman do not currently operate comparable nationwide PHEV incentive schemes. Morocco’s growing EV infrastructure is partly supported by government targets for clean transport. Jordan has among the lowest electric vehicle running costs in the region given relatively low electricity tariffs.
Market availability and pricing correct to the best of our knowledge as of April 2026. Prices are sourced from official brand websites and regional automotive platforms. EGP pricing reflects volatile market conditions. Buyers should confirm specifications, pricing, and local incentive eligibility directly with their authorised BYD dealer.
