Transforming classic cars into electric vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction worldwide, but a new UAE-based company, Fuse, is taking an innovative approach to electrification by converting internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles into fully electric ones. This groundbreaking idea promises to revolutionize the EV market in the region, providing a sustainable and cost-effective solution.

In the latest episode of the “Let’s Talk Mobility,” podcast, Salman Hussain, CEO and co-founder of Fuse, shared the company’s vision and progress. Fuse began two years ago with a simple yet ambitious idea: to transform classic cars into electric vehicles.

“We thought, you know, why don’t you bring that with a unique twist to Dubai. The weather is different, so we had to make a lot of changes to the systems, but we thought we could do it,” Mr. Hussain explained. This vision led to the establishment of Fuse, which has since pioneered the field of EV conversions in the UAE.

Fuse’s approach is not only innovative but also practical. The company has developed kits for various car models, making the conversion process straightforward.

“It’s very simple. It’s a plug-and-play system, like you just literally plug a few things together. Literally take a Lego set, and you’re able to convert that existing car to an EV,” said Mr. Hussain.

This method ensures minimal modifications to the vehicle, preserving its original structure and aesthetics while significantly reducing costs.

The environmental benefits of converting existing vehicles to electric are substantial. By retrofitting a car to an EV, Fuse helps reduce mechanical waste and carbon emissions.

Mr. Hussain emphasized, “If you look at the vehicles on the road, we have 1.4 billion vehicles existing, pretty much all of them are petrol at the moment, or diesel. Taking that stock and making it an electric, electrified version of them through a Fuse kit or any other kind of kit like this makes sense”.

Fuse is also focusing on making EV conversions accessible in emerging markets where the cost of new electric vehicles is prohibitively high. The company aims to bring EV technology to regions that might not otherwise have the resources to adopt electric mobility. By offering affordable conversion kits, Fuse is helping to accelerate the global shift towards sustainable transportation.

With its innovative solutions and commitment to sustainability, Fuse is poised to make a significant impact on the EV landscape, not just in the UAE but globally. Their work exemplifies how leveraging existing resources can lead to groundbreaking advancements in technology and environmental stewardship.
