Volkswagen reveals electric ID.3 GTI, its most powerful GTI yet

Volkswagen has given a world premiere to the near-production ID.3 GTI, moving its highest-volume hot-hatch badge onto a battery-electric platform in the 50th year of GTI history. The German brand calls it the most powerful GTI ever built in series production, and pre-sales start at the beginning of 2027.

How fast is the electric GTI?

The ID.3 GTI sends 240 kW, or 326 PS, to the rear axle. Its maximum torque reaches 545 Nm, which stays available across the rev range. According to Volkswagen’s forecast, the car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h.

Launch Control comes as standard, so hard starts can be managed without wheelspin. Furthermore, Volkswagen pairs this output with an adaptive DCC sports chassis and a low centre of gravity. Together, the brand says, these give the GTI a sharper, more dynamic character.

What range and charging does it offer?

The rear-mounted motor draws energy from a lithium-ion battery with a net capacity of 79 kWh. Volkswagen estimates range at up to 601 km, though it labels that figure a forecast value. Combined power consumption is quoted, also as a preliminary forecast, at 14.5 kWh per 100 km.

On a DC rapid charger, the battery can move from 10 to 80 per cent in around 29 minutes at up to 183 kW, according to Volkswagen’s estimate. As a result, the brand positions the GTI as a genuine everyday car rather than a track-only special. Space and comfort are stressed too.

What marks it out as a GTI?

The design carries familiar GTI cues. Above all, a red horizontal stripe sits directly over the LED light strip between the headlights, a nod to the red radiator grille frame of the first Golf GTI from 1976. Illuminated VW logo aside, vertical LED elements in the bumper corners signal that this GTI is electric.

Standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights dominate the front, and a high-gloss black honeycomb air intake grille sits below. Meanwhile, red-painted vertical elements and a splitter-style front spoiler reference motorsport. All equipment specifications refer to the German market, so other countries may differ.

New 20-inch alloy wheels named Wörthersee, after the Austrian GTI meet, define the side view. In addition, the mirror caps and side members are finished in high-gloss black. Compared with the previous ID.3 GTX, the new car looks longer and sleeker, partly because the roof, roof spoiler and boot lid now match the body colour rather than being black.

Which colours are available?

Buyers can choose from five shades. These are Tornado Red, Moonstone Grey, Scale Silver metallic, Grenadilla Black metallic and Glacier White metallic. Tornado Red, with colour code LY3D, has history behind it, since it appeared on the facelifted first-generation Golf GTI and remains the signature GTI colour.

What is the interior like?

Red on black dominates the cabin. A fine red stripe runs across the full width of the dash panel, while the new multifunction sports steering wheel carries a red 12 o’clock marking. Premium sport seats use a GTI check pattern, a fresh take on the tartan of the 1976 Golf GTI seats.

The cockpit draws on the redesigned ID.3 Neo. Consequently, a larger Digital Cockpit and a 32.77 cm, or 12.9-inch, touch display of the new Innovision infotainment system sit on one visual axis. Below the screen, a button strip handles air conditioning and the hazard lights, and a rotary knob on the centre console controls volume and track skipping.

What does GTI mode do?

An illuminated GTI button sits at 6 o’clock on the steering wheel. Press it and a new GTI driving profile joins the Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual settings. In this mode, the drive, progressive steering and adaptive DCC chassis all shift to their sportiest calibration, and Launch Control can be armed.

At the same time, the ambient lighting turns red, the ID. Light flashes briefly and the Digital Cockpit switches to a power display with an integrated speedometer. Notably, the sound of a combustion engine plays in the background.

How practical is it day to day?

Every option offered for the ID.3 Neo will also be available on the GTI. These include a panoramic sunroof, a massage and memory function for the sport seats, a 480-watt Harman Kardon system, an augmented reality head-up display and a bracket for a bicycle carrier with a 75 kg drawbar load.

A new vehicle-to-load function lets owners power or charge other devices through an optional PowerSocket adapter. So a weekend trip with two e-bikes becomes straightforward, since the bikes can be carried and recharged from the car between rides. Assistance options add a memory function for Park Assist Pro and the latest Travel Assist, which for the first time reacts to traffic lights within system limits and can brake to a standstill at a red signal, with the driver staying responsible.

When can buyers order one?

The car shown is a near-production concept and is not yet on sale. Pre-sales are set to open at the beginning of 2027. Volkswagen has not confirmed pricing at this stage. For now, the ID.3 GTI stands as the brand’s attempt to carry a 50-year hot-hatch badge into its electric era.
