Uber users in Abu Dhabi may soon have the option to ride in self-driving robotaxis under a new collaboration between Uber and WeRide, a pioneer in autonomous driving technology.
Scheduled to launch in Abu Dhabi before the end of the year, a fleet of WeRide’s autonomous vehicles will be accessible to users via the Uber app. When requesting a ride, users could be presented with the option to travel in one of the WeRide robotaxis.
WeRide, recognised for operating the largest robotaxi fleet in the UAE, has made its self-driving vehicles available to consumers through its own app. This new partnership with Uber allows both companies to leverage their expertise and technological capabilities to provide a seamless, futuristic transportation experience.
In July 2023, a significant milestone was achieved when WeRide received the UAE’s first and only national licence for self-driving vehicles. This licence permits WeRide to test and operate its autonomous fleet on public roads across the nation, paving the way for broader deployment and commercialisation.
Expressing enthusiasm about the collaboration, Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide, commented: “We are honoured to partner with Uber to continue to bring our technology to global markets. Together, we aim to combine our collective experience and expertise to deliver much-needed, affordable, sustainable and safe mobility solutions to a global audience.”
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi echoed this sentiment, highlighting the broader vision for the future of transportation. “It’s clear that the future of mobility will be increasingly shared, electric and autonomous, and we look forward to working with leading AV [autonomous vehicle] companies like WeRide to help bring the benefits of autonomous technology to cities around the world,” he remarked.
The days of trying to wave down a taxi are truly over. Very soon, there won’t even be a driver.
