Volkswagen’s Tiguan goes electric to replace the ID.4 and ID.5

Volkswagen ID. Tiguan near-production prototype

Volkswagen has confirmed an all-electric Tiguan for early 2027. The new ID. Tiguan will replace both the ID.4 and ID.5, which puts the brand’s best-known SUV name at the centre of its electric line-up.

What has Volkswagen announced?

Volkswagen brand chief executive Thomas Schäfer has confirmed the ID. Tiguan for early 2027. It’ll take over from the ID.4 and ID.5, which currently anchor the brand’s electric SUV range. Sales will start in Europe. The US and other global markets will then follow shortly after.

The move is part of a wider shake-up of Volkswagen’s electric line-up. In fact, the ID. Tiguan follows the ID. Polo and ID. Cross into this new family. Volkswagen calls these cars “True Volkswagen” models. Each one brings a fresh look, updated technology and a more refined interior.

Schäfer said the all-electric model “builds on the strengths of the bestseller”. He added that it offers “premium design, generous space, intuitive operation”. Naturally, that’s the carmaker’s own description. Buyers will make up their own minds once cars reach showrooms.

What does the Tiguan name signal?

The Tiguan is one of Volkswagen’s biggest sellers. Over the past year, the company delivered more than 1 million Tiguan and Tayron models worldwide. Both currently come with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid power. So an all-electric version fills an obvious gap in the range.

The ID.4 and ID.5 have also done well by electric standards. Together, they’ve sold more than 950,000 units since going on sale in 2021. Even so, a familiar name may help. By switching badges, Volkswagen places its electric SUV next to a model that huge numbers of shoppers already recognise.

What does the prototype look like?

Volkswagen has released several images of a camouflaged prototype. Even under the wrap, the pictures confirm details from recent spy shots. Most notably, the ID. Tiguan adopts a boxier, more traditional SUV shape. In fact, it looks nearly identical to the combustion-engined Tiguan.

There’s a practical change too. The prototype has pop-out door handles in place of the flush handles on the ID.4 and ID.5. Meanwhile, the upright profile is a clear step away from the softer, rounded look of the current cars.

That styling won’t suit everyone. For instance, one reader commenting on the announcement said the ID.4’s wagon-like shape appealed more than a conventional SUV. Nevertheless, Volkswagen appears to be betting that a familiar design will win over existing Tiguan owners.

What will the cabin be like?

Volkswagen hadn’t shown the interior by the end of September. However, the ID. Tiguan is expected to use the brand’s new interior design, already previewed in the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. You can see more of that layout on Volkswagen’s newsroom.

If so, it’ll likely gain Volkswagen’s new infotainment system. More importantly for many drivers, it should also bring back physical buttons. Until the official reveal, though, treat these cabin details as informed expectations.

How far will it go on a charge?

Volkswagen hasn’t released range, power, charging speed or pricing for the ID. Tiguan. It is expected to gain range, charging speed and cold-weather performance, thanks to the brand’s recent battery and drivetrain updates. Still, that’s a forecast, and official numbers will arrive nearer launch.

For comparison, the current ID.4 uses an 82 kWh battery. The rear-wheel-drive version has an EPA-estimated range of up to 291 miles. Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive model carries an EPA estimate of around 263 miles. On the WLTP cycle, Volkswagen quotes up to 351 miles, or 566 km, for the 2026 ID.4. That’s a manufacturer estimate, so real-world range will vary with weather, speed and driving style.

When will we see the finished car?

Volkswagen said the ID. Tiguan would make its official debut in “early October”. It hadn’t named a specific date by 30 September. At the debut, the company was expected to confirm the key figures that buyers need, including range and price.

Until then, the overall plan is fairly clear. Volkswagen is folding two electric models into one well-known name. As a result, the Tiguan will soon cover petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric buyers in a single family.
