Every BYD hybrid car on sale around the world

BYD’s 2025 annual results confirmed it as the world’s largest producer of plug-in hybrid vehicles. Here is every model, how the technology works, and where each car is sold.

BYD sold 4.6 million new energy vehicles in 2025. Of those, 2.29 million were plug-in hybrids, according to the company’s official reported sales data, making BYD the world’s largest PHEV producer by volume

Its hybrid lineup now spans compact saloons, mid-size crossovers, a seven-seat SUV, a luxury MPV, a pickup truck, and a high-performance off-road SUV. It also spans at least three naming conventions depending on which country you buy in, which makes the range harder to navigate than it ought to be.

This guide covers every current BYD plug-in hybrid, from the entry-level Qin Plus to the Yangwang U8, with the specifications and market availability buyers need.

How does BYD’s hybrid technology work?

BYD calls its plug-in hybrid system Super DM, which stands for Dual Mode. Three variants exist across the range.

DM-i is the standard efficiency-focused system. The petrol engine primarily generates electricity for the battery rather than driving the wheels directly. In everyday driving, the car behaves like a full EV. The fifth-generation DM-i 5.0 platform, introduced in May 2024, claims engine thermal efficiency of up to 46 per cent. Under CLTC test conditions, manufacturer-claimed fuel consumption in hybrid mode is 2.9 litres per 100 km. Both are among the highest published figures for any production PHEV. Earlier DM-i generations, used on several models sold internationally, return somewhat lower figures.

DM-p is the performance variant, using twin electric motors and AWD. It is found in the Han DM-p and Tang DM-p, and prioritises acceleration over economy.

DMO is BYD’s off-road hybrid architecture, applied to the Shark 6 pickup and select models from BYD’s Fangchengbao sub-brand. It adds twin-motor AWD, selectable terrain modes, and larger battery capacity.

All BYD hybrids use the Blade Battery, a lithium iron phosphate cell pack designed to resist thermal runaway. Warranty terms vary by market; in China and several export markets, BYD offers a six-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty and eight years or 200,000 km on the battery.

What are the BYD hybrid saloons?

BYD offers four distinct plug-in hybrid saloons. The Qin Plus DM-i is the entry model, pairing a 1.5-litre engine with a front electric motor. The 11.75 kWh Blade Battery provides 55 km of pure electric range. Combined output is 177 hp and combined range is approximately 755 km.

The Qin L DM-i, introduced in China in 2024, steps up to the fifth-generation platform. A 1.5-litre engine and electric motor combination delivers improved output and range over the Qin Plus. The 18.3 kWh battery provides a manufacturer-claimed pure electric range of 120 km (CLTC) and a combined range of 1,300 km (CLTC). Hybrid fuel consumption is a manufacturer-claimed 3.8 litres per 100 km.

The Han DM-i is BYD’s full-size flagship saloon. The 2025 Long-Range Edition, launched in October 2025, extended the pure electric range to 245 km under CLTC test conditions. Manufacturer-claimed hybrid fuel consumption is 3.44 litres per 100 km. The Han DM-p runs alongside it as the performance variant, adding twin-motor AWD. The Han is sold primarily in China, with selective export to other markets.

The Seal 06 DM-i is BYD’s Ocean-series hybrid saloon, marketed under different names in export markets, including as the Seal 7 in some regions, though naming varies and readers should verify locally. Combined output is 270 hp. The 17.6 kWh battery delivers 100 to 150 km of pure electric range depending on variant. Total combined range is manufacturer-claimed to exceed 2,000 km under CLTC test conditions.

What are the BYD hybrid SUVs and crossovers?

The Song Plus DM-i is one of BYD’s best-selling models globally. It is sold under different names in different markets: Sealion 6 DM-i in Australia, Thailand, and South Africa; Seal U DM-i in Europe. The underlying vehicle is the same. A 1.5-litre turbocharged engine pairs with a front motor in FWD form, producing 197 hp. An AWD variant uses twin motors. Pure electric range is up to 160 km (CLTC). Combined range is approximately 1,000 km. In the UK, the Seal U DM-i went on sale in June 2024.

The Sealion 5 DM-i is a smaller compact SUV, sold under the same name in Europe, Australia, and several other markets. A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated DM-i engine produces 210 hp. The European version starts from approximately £30,000 in markets where it is available, according to BYD’s European website. Australian rollout is continuing.

The Tang DM-i is BYD’s seven-seat hybrid SUV. A 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and a 200 kW electric motor produce 415 hp combined. The 21.5 kWh Blade Battery delivers a manufacturer-claimed 115 km of pure electric range (CLTC) and a combined range of approximately 1,150 km. The body is 4,870 mm long on a 2,820 mm wheelbase, with a 2+3+2 seating layout. The Tang DM-p adds twin-motor AWD and reaches 100 km/h in under 4.3 seconds. The Tang is sold in China, the Philippines, and several Southeast Asian markets.

The Sealion 07 DM-i is a mid-size five-seat SUV currently focused on the Chinese market. Battery options of 18.3 kWh and 26.6 kWh give manufacturer-claimed pure electric ranges of up to 150 km (CLTC). International availability is limited at present.

What is the BYD hybrid pickup truck?

The Shark 6 is the first plug-in hybrid pickup to reach multiple global markets simultaneously. A 1.5-litre turbocharged engine pairs with a 170 kW front motor and a 150 kW rear motor for 430 hp and 650 Nm combined. The 29.5 kWh Blade Battery provides approximately 100 km of pure electric range and a combined range of around 520 km. The 0–100 km/h time is 5.7 seconds and towing capacity is 2.5 tonnes. Terrain modes cover mud, sand, and snow. It is sold in Australia, South Africa, and Latin American markets, competing directly with the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Neither offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain as of 2026.

Are there BYD hybrids from premium sub-brands?

Denza is BYD’s premium MPV and SUV sub-brand. The Denza D9 DM-i is a six- or seven-seat luxury MPV with a 1.5-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid drivetrain and a manufacturer-claimed pure electric range of up to 190 km. It competes with the Toyota Alphard in China and across Southeast Asia.

Yangwang is BYD’s high-performance and off-road sub-brand. The Yangwang U8 is a large luxury SUV powered by four independent electric motors plus a 2.0-litre range-extending petrol engine, producing around 1,100 hp combined. It includes emergency flotation capability, rated for short-term use in water. The U8 is sold primarily in China.

Where are BYD hybrids available?

In Europe, the Seal U DM-i is confirmed across multiple markets, including the UK, France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden. The Sealion 5 DM-i is available in select European markets. The Sealion 07 DM-i has launched in some European countries; availability is expanding but remains inconsistent across the region. In Australia, the Sealion 6 and Shark 6 are confirmed, with the Sealion 5 rollout continuing. In Southeast Asia, PHEVs are now on sale in Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia. In Latin America, the Song Plus DM-i is available in Brazil and Mexico. South Africa carries the Sealion 6 and Shark 6.

BYD exported 1.05 million NEVs in 2025, a 151 per cent increase year-on-year and the first time the company has exceeded one million overseas deliveries in a single year.

One final note for buyers across all markets: naming varies significantly by region. The Song Plus DM-i, Sealion 6 DM-i, and Seal U DM-i are the same vehicle sold under three different names. Checking your country’s official BYD website will confirm which models are available locally and under what name.

Specifications and market availability correct to the best of our knowledge as of April 2026. Range and performance figures are manufacturer-claimed and, unless labelled WLTP, are based on the CLTC test cycle used in China. Real-world figures will vary. BYD’s lineup evolves rapidly; verify current availability with your local authorised dealer.
