BYD plans 3,000-site ultra-fast charger rollout in Europe

BYD has opened its first Flash Charging station in Germany. The site uses a system rated at up to 1,500 kW. According to BYD, a compatible electric vehicle can charge from 10 to 70 per cent in around five minutes.

What has BYD launched in Europe?

The German opening is the first step in a much larger plan. BYD says it will build 3,000 ultra-fast charging stations across Europe by the end of 2026. That figure forms part of a wider target of 6,000 sites outside China.

How does the technology work?

BYD’s second-generation Flash Charging system pairs with its Blade Battery 2.0. The company says a full charge from 10 to 97 per cent takes nine minutes. In addition, BYD states the system maintains strong performance even in cold weather, with only limited slowdown at very low temperatures.

For context, Tesla’s latest Supercharger hardware peaks at around 350 kW. BYD’s 1,500 kW figure is therefore considerably higher. However, real-world performance will depend on the specific vehicle and conditions. The system is currently compatible with BYD’s own vehicles designed to accept that charge rate.

How does BYD’s European plan compare to its Chinese network?

BYD has already built more than 6,100 Flash Charging stations in China. These are spread across hundreds of cities. In addition, a partnership with Sinopec supports further domestic expansion.

That scale shows BYD has the industrial capacity to move quickly. However, Europe presents a different operating environment. Grid connections, planning permissions, and national regulations vary considerably across EU member states. Consequently, the 2026 timetable will be challenging to meet.

What role does the Denza brand play in this expansion?

BYD’s premium Denza brand is already active in Germany. Frandroid reported that Denza opened its first showroom in Hamburg. A wider retail footprint is planned across the country.

Charging infrastructure and retail presence are closely connected in BYD’s European strategy. A reliable fast-charging network gives buyers more confidence in long-distance travel. As a result, BYD appears to be treating charging investment as a direct support to vehicle sales rather than a separate business line.

What is the situation in France?

France is among the markets BYD is targeting for Flash Charging. However, no confirmed timetable for a broader rollout there has been announced. BYD’s first French showroom opened in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, with more locations expected before the end of 2026.

The French market carries additional complexity. French government incentives now use an environmental scoring system. That system tends to disadvantage vehicles manufactured in Asia. Therefore, BYD faces a commercial headwind in France that does not apply equally across other European markets. Meanwhile, BYD continues to record strong export growth, which suggests the group views Europe as a long-term market. The investment in owned charging infrastructure reinforces that reading.
