UAE’s Theeb X01 SUV is designed for Gulf terrain

The Gulf SUV market has a new local entrant. K2, a UAE automotive brand, unveiled Theeb and its first model, the X01, at Make it in the Emirates 2026 in Abu Dhabi. The launch draws attention because the Gulf is one of the world’s strongest SUV markets. However, most vehicles sold there were conceived for different climates and road conditions. Theeb takes a different approach. K2 has designed the X01 around desert heat, long distances, and rough terrain from the outset.

What does Theeb mean, and why does it matter?

Theeb means “wolf” in Arabic. K2 chose the name as a reference to endurance and resilience. The branding draws on Arabic script and regional symbolism. However, the localisation goes deeper than naming. K2 says the X01 has been built around the realities of Gulf life, including family use, dune driving, and mountain routes. The colour names follow the same principle. Shamsa Yellow, Rimal Pearl, and Hajar Grey all carry Arabic-inspired references to the regional landscape.

What powertrain does the X01 use?

The X01 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid system. It produces 550hp and 760Nm of torque. The battery capacity is 19.45kWh. The system includes dual electric motors, four-wheel drive, and a 4DHT transmission. K2 has not yet disclosed the electric-only range. However, the plug-in hybrid layout is well suited to Gulf driving. Low-end torque, quiet low-speed crawling, and improved efficiency are all useful on and off road in this region. For EVLife readers, the powertrain choice signals that K2 is building for practicality, not purely for performance figures.

How capable is the X01 off road?

The X01 has 13 drive modes. These include Sand, Rock, Wade, Crawl, and Tank Turn. Ground clearance is 235mm. Reports indicate a body-on-frame structure with solid axles front and rear. That layout is now largely reserved for serious off-road vehicles. Consequently, if confirmed, it would place the X01 in a small group of trucks with genuine mechanical capability rather than styled appearance only. Gulf buyers tend to value that kind of hardware credibility.

What trim levels will be available?

The X01 will launch in three trims: Base, Lux, and Sport. The higher-specification versions add lifestyle-oriented touches. The Sport model, in addition, carries expedition-ready equipment. That includes a roof rack, LED light bar, snorkel, bull bar, and all-terrain tyres. The range therefore covers buyers who want a premium daily driver and those who want a prepared off-road vehicle.

Where will the X01 be built?

K2 says the X01 is planned for semi-knocked-down assembly in Abu Dhabi. However, pricing, supplier partnerships, and production timings have not yet been confirmed. That leaves several open questions for buyers and fleet operators in the region. The assembly plan is still significant. Local production, even partial, gives K2 a degree of supply chain control that pure importers do not have. As a result, it also aligns with the UAE’s broader industrial ambitions in the mobility sector.

Can Theeb compete with established names?

The Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, and Land Rover Defender hold strong positions in the Gulf. These vehicles have decades of regional trust behind them. Theeb is a new name with no track record yet in dealerships or on dunes. Therefore, K2 faces a real challenge in converting interest into sales. However, the X01 has a genuine argument. It was designed for Gulf conditions from day one. Buyers who prioritise local relevance over badge history have a reason to consider it. The plug-in hybrid system also gives the X01 an efficiency angle that older petrol-only rivals cannot easily match. In a market where fuel costs and long highway distances both matter, that counts for something. K2 has not confirmed a launch date or retail price. Those figures will determine whether the X01 becomes a genuine challenger or remains a compelling concept. For now, the X01 shows that the Gulf region has the capability to conceive and build its own vehicles for its own terrain.
