The Chery Jaguar Land Rover new-energy brand has begun mass production of the Freelander 8 in China, with test cars already in the Middle East and an Abu Dhabi debut planned for September 2026. The UAE will be the brand’s first overseas launch market.
Where is the Freelander 8 being built?
The first mass-production units have rolled off the assembly line at the Chery Jaguar Land Rover Changshu Manufacturing Base. This facility is also home to what the company calls the Freelander Super Factory.
Production for international markets is now underway. Meanwhile, test vehicles have already arrived in the Middle East for regional road testing.
According to the company, the production milestone moves Freelander from product development towards global market readiness. As a result, preparations are accelerating for its first international launch.
Why is the Middle East a priority for Freelander?
Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Group, attended the roll-off ceremony. He highlighted the strategic importance of international markets to Freelander’s future growth.
Representatives from several Middle Eastern media outlets also attended the event and toured the factory. The visit gave an overview of the brand’s product philosophy, engineering, manufacturing and global strategy.
According to the company, media representatives identified premium design, intelligent technology and advanced manufacturing as the brand’s main strengths. These points came up ahead of its Middle East introduction.
The UAE has been chosen as Freelander’s first international launch market. Furthermore, the company expects it to serve as a gateway for future global expansion, with the Abu Dhabi debut formally introducing the brand to the region.

How much has the Super Factory cost?
The Freelander Super Factory brings together Jaguar Land Rover’s design heritage and Chery’s new-energy vehicle technology. According to the company, the two combine at the Changshu site.
The facility is supported by a total investment of more than $3.1 billion. In addition, a further $440 million has gone into new-energy intelligent manufacturing upgrades.
The plant uses digital manufacturing systems, flexible production processes and enhanced quality-management capabilities. These are designed to support the production of next-generation new-energy vehicles.
Freelander says the site’s manufacturing, quality-control and development systems will allow it to build premium intelligent vehicles that meet global standards.
What role do robots play in production?
The upgraded facility contains more than 1,100 robots. It also has a fully automated body shop and end-to-end digital quality-traceability systems.
According to the company, these systems maintain manufacturing precision and consistent quality throughout the process. Moreover, every Freelander 8 undergoes several validation procedures before leaving the line.
These procedures include battery-sealing inspections, driver-assistance system calibration and heavy-rain simulation testing. Additionally, the factory uses water-recycling systems and low-carbon production technologies as part of the brand’s sustainability programme.
How is the Freelander 8 being tested locally?
Test vehicles are currently being evaluated across desert, coastal and urban environments in the Middle East. Consequently, the regional programme assesses performance, thermal management and all-terrain capability under demanding conditions.
According to the company, testing is being conducted in real-world regional driving environments. These trials will support final preparations for customer deliveries and the Abu Dhabi launch.
The Middle East testing phase follows the start of mass production. Therefore, it represents another stage in the model’s global development programme.
What is the positioning of the Freelander 8?
The Freelander 8 has been developed around three core product pillars. The company lists these as British Craftsmanship, Smart Confidence and All-Terrain Freedom.
Described by the company as the next chapter of its “Legend Reborn” strategy, the model has been developed for the new-energy era. It combines premium design, intelligent technology and all-terrain capability.
Freelander says the vehicle is aimed at what it calls “Freedom Seekers”. Accordingly, the model is positioned as a premium intelligent vehicle capable of handling a range of driving environments.
