Changan’s Deepal brand has launched its S09 flagship, a six-seat range-extended electric SUV, at events in Muscat and Cairo. However, the company hasn’t yet shared prices, range figures or launch dates for other markets.
What has Changan announced?
Changan Automobile revealed the Deepal S09 on 27 October 2026, according to its press release. Launch events took place in Muscat, Oman, and Cairo, Egypt. Deepal is Changan’s new energy vehicle brand. The S09 now sits at the top of its line-up in the Middle East and Africa.
The S09 is a full-size, six-seat SUV with four-wheel drive. Changan also says it co-developed the car with Huawei. In addition, the brand pitches it as a premium family vehicle with a strong focus on comfort and in-car technology.
How does the range-extender set-up work?
A range-extended electric vehicle, or REEV, drives its wheels with electric motors. Meanwhile, a petrol engine acts as an onboard generator to top up the battery. In the S09, that generator is a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit. It works alongside a dual-motor four-wheel-drive system.
Changan says the battery can charge from 30 to 80 per cent in about 15 minutes under suitable conditions. That’s a manufacturer estimate, though, and no independent test has confirmed it. Also, the release doesn’t give battery capacity, electric-only range, power output or peak charging rate. So buyers can’t yet compare it properly with rivals.
What’s it like inside?
Comfort is clearly the priority. For example, the second row gets two “zero-gravity” seats with 16-way power adjustment. They’re also heated, ventilated and fitted with a massage function. Meanwhile, the third row has electrically adjustable backrests, and Changan describes its space as generous.
Ride quality relies on what Deepal calls Magic Carpet suspension. It pairs adaptive damping with air suspension. As a result, the car adjusts itself automatically as road surfaces change.
Screens dominate the cabin. There are two 15.6-inch front displays and a 21.4-inch entertainment screen for rear passengers. In addition, a 43-inch augmented-reality head-up display projects information ahead of the driver. A 20-speaker sound system completes the package.
The software runs on Deepal OS 4.0. It supports a smartphone Bluetooth key, so owners can unlock the car with their phone. There’s also a 10-litre compartment that can cool or heat drinks and snacks.
What safety and driver-assistance features are included?
Deepal’s AD Pro package bundles several driver aids. These include adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance. The system also offers automatic parking and intelligent reversing assistance.
For crash protection, the S09 carries eight airbags, including extended side-curtain coverage. Changan also cites a reinforced body structure. However, the release doesn’t mention any independent crash-test rating.
What has Changan said about the launch?
Cecelia, Sales Director for Changan Automobile Middle East and Africa, spoke about the new model. “The DEEPAL S09 reflects our vision of making advanced mobility technology more accessible to modern families,” she said. She added that the SUV marks another important step in the brand’s commitment to customers in the region.
Changan says the S09 joins an expanding Deepal line-up there. Furthermore, it says a sales and service network will support the range.
How big is Changan’s presence in the region?
Changan first entered the Middle East and Africa in 1994. Since then, it says it has sold more than 500,000 vehicles there. Its sales and service network now covers more than 40 countries and regions. These include the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, as well as South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria.
The S09 already went on sale in Saudi Arabia in September. Even so, Changan held launch events only in Oman and Egypt this time, and there’s no confirmed date yet for the UAE.
What don’t we know yet?
Several key details are missing. First, Changan hasn’t announced prices for Oman or Egypt. Second, there’s no official electric-only or combined range figure. Third, the release doesn’t state battery size or motor output. Finally, delivery timings remain unconfirmed.
Until those figures arrive, the S09 is hard to judge on value. Nevertheless, its specification list shows where Deepal wants to compete, among large, tech-heavy family SUVs. You can read the full announcement on GlobeNewswire.
