Volvo all-electric EX60 set for 2026 launch

Volvo Cars has announced the EX60, a fully electric midsize SUV that will debut in January 2026. The model is expected to be central to Volvo’s strategy as it accelerates towards a near-fully electrified lineup by 2030.

How important is the EX60 for Volvo’s electrification plans?

About 20% of Volvo’s global sales are currently fully electric, with plug-in hybrids accounting for another 24%. The company has set a target for 90–100% of global sales to be electrified by 2030. This marks a shift from its earlier goal of being fully electric by that year, acknowledging that mild hybrids may still represent up to 10% of sales.

Despite this adjustment, Volvo continues to see strong momentum. In the second quarter of 2025, it reported a 20% gross margin on battery electric vehicles, showing the profitability of its premium EV line.

When and how will the EX60 be launched?

The EX60 will be unveiled on 21 January 2026 through a livestream event in Stockholm. It will be the first Volvo built on the brand’s newest technology platform. The company says the model will deliver the longest electric range of any Volvo to date and introduce what it describes as a “groundbreaking user experience.”

Production will begin at Volvo’s Torslanda factory in Gothenburg, Sweden. The SUV will later reach global markets including the United States, where Volvo sees significant opportunity in the midsize premium SUV segment.

Why is the midsize SUV segment strategic?

Volvo is already strong in the premium midsize SUV market. The EX60 will sit between the smaller EX30 and EX40, and the larger EX90. In the US, where Volvo’s EV share is only around 9%, the EX60 could help broaden appeal by offering a balance of performance, space, and price.

How is Volvo addressing sustainability beyond electrification?

Volvo continues to emphasise safety and environmental responsibility as core brand values. Alongside its zero-tailpipe-emission models, the company is investing in materials such as green steel to reduce lifecycle emissions. For buyers seeking both practicality and climate-conscious design, the EX60 is positioned as a comprehensive sustainability choice.

What does this mean for Volvo’s future?

While some electrification targets have been tempered due to infrastructure delays and weaker government incentives, Volvo remains one of the most ambitious legacy manufacturers in the EV transition. The EX60 is set to be a cornerstone of this strategy, combining extended electric range, advanced technology, and Volvo’s established safety credentials.
