The Chinese automotive giant has announced that its new plug-in hybrid models will boast an all-electric range of approximately 200 kilometres and peak charging power that can reach up to 150 kW. This innovative approach aims to facilitate extensive daily use of electric modes, with a seamless transition to an internal combustion engine for longer journeys, offering maximum user flexibility.
Stella Li, BYD’s Executive Vice President, articulated this vision by stating, “Our goal is really to make people use EV mode daily, but if they want to travel long distances, given the ability to recharge, they have the freedom to go wherever they want.” This commitment to flexibility addresses common consumer concerns about the limitations of electric vehicles, particularly regarding range and charging times.
The competitive landscape for plug-in hybrids is intensifying, with leading manufacturers vying for market share. Alfredo Altavilla, a special advisor for BYD in Europe, noted that plug-in hybrids have become the focal point of competition within the industry, particularly in light of the potential revisions to regulations concerning the sale of internal combustion vehicles. As it stands, a ban is expected to come into effect by 2035 under the European Green Deal. The possibility of this regulation being relaxed fuels ongoing discussions about the future viability of hybrid models, a sector in which BYD possesses a compelling technological advantage through its proprietary DM-i system. This integrates Blade Battery technology with a highly efficient gasoline engine tailored for hybrid applications, setting BYD apart from its competitors.

The launch of high-end models, such as the Yangwang U9 sports car, priced at $230,000, exemplifies BYD’s efforts to diversify its portfolio across various price segments and fuel types.
