Smart Mobility International (SMI), a UAE-based distributor of new energy vehicles, is taking decisive steps to shape the electric vehicle (EV) landscape in the Gulf. It has made back-to-back announcements revealing a partnership with China’s IM Motors as well as plans to launch range-extended EVs (REEVs) from AVATR.
SMI’s dual strategy focuses on introducing both high-end battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and versatile REEVs tailored to regional needs. This move reflects not only market demand but also the unique driving habits and infrastructure challenges of the Gulf region.
IM Motors Enters the Gulf Through SMI
SMI has signed an exclusive partnership with IM Motors to distribute its premium electric vehicles in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Backed by Chinese automotive giant SAIC Motor, tech conglomerate Alibaba Group, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech, IM Motors is known for fusing luxury design with advanced electric technologies.
The partnership was unveiled at IM Motors’ newly opened showroom on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road, signalling the brand’s formal entry into the GCC. The launch featured the IM LS7, a fully electric luxury SUV that integrates cutting-edge features including a panoramic AI-enabled cockpit and zero-gravity seating technology. Designed for comfort and innovation, the LS7 marks a bold entry into the region’s premium EV segment.
According to SMI CEO Moutaz Louis, the agreement is more than a commercial milestone. It represents a commitment to “shaping a future defined by intelligent mobility, premium performance, and a deep commitment to sustainability.” The initial rollout will see the LS7 arrive in its BEV version, with a range-extended variant to follow. Future models, including the IM L7 sedan and the LS6 SUV, will also feature both BEV and REEV options, expanding the range available to consumers.
Unlike conventional BEVs, which require external charging, REEVs are powered primarily by electric motors but also include a small petrol-powered generator. This generator charges the battery on the go, extending the vehicle’s range and easing concerns over charging station availability, a key consideration for residents who travel long distances across the Emirates or into the desert.
The partnership aligns with the UAE’s national electric vehicle strategy, which aims for half of all vehicles on the road to be electric by 2050. By securing the exclusive distribution rights for IM Motors in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, SMI is well-positioned to support this transition while introducing global innovation to regional markets.

Range-Extended EVs for Local Driving Needs
In a separate development, SMI has also announced it will introduce REEVs from the Chinese brand AVATR, complementing its existing BEV offerings. These new models are intended to bridge the gap between full electrification and the current limitations of charging infrastructure, particularly outside urban areas.
The first REEV model, the AVATR 07, features AVATR’s proprietary KUNLUN range-extending technology. It joins a growing portfolio that already includes the AVATR 11 and AVATR 12 BEVs currently available in the UAE.
SMI’s approach reflects a pragmatic understanding of the UAE market. While the government has made significant strides in building a public charging network, adoption still faces hurdles in areas where infrastructure is less developed. REEVs offer a practical solution, particularly for customers who value the environmental benefits of electric driving but need the reliability of extended range.
“We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to electrification,” said Moutaz Louis. “The UAE is a country of diverse lifestyles, from urban professionals to adventure seekers. Our job is to meet them where they are, with the right vehicle for their journey.”
Supporting National Sustainability Goals
Both initiatives come at a time when Gulf governments are actively encouraging the adoption of clean mobility solutions. The UAE’s goal of achieving a 50% EV share by 2050 underscores the urgency of building a diversified and inclusive electric vehicle ecosystem.
By offering both BEVs and REEVs, SMI provides consumers with options that match their lifestyles and needs. High-end models like the IM LS7 target luxury and performance-focused buyers, while REEVs such as the AVATR 07 are aimed at expanding EV accessibility for a broader demographic.
The expansion into Saudi Arabia, expected later this year, further amplifies the company’s regional footprint and aligns with broader trends across the Gulf toward sustainable transport solutions. As infrastructure continues to evolve, SMI’s dual focus on innovation and adaptability puts it in a strong position to lead the market shift.
