What is BYD?

At the forefront of the global race for sustainable transportation and renewable energy solutions, China’s BYD (short for “Build Your Dreams”) has steadily built an impressive empire. Founded in 1995 as a battery manufacturer, BYD has since evolved into a multinational giant, with operations spanning the automotive, electronics, rail transit, and new energy sectors.

It all started with phone batteries

Originally a manufacturer of rechargeable batteries for mobile phones, BYD expanded its portfolio in 2003 with the acquisition of Qinchuan Auto, marking its entry into the automotive industry. The company wasted no time in developing electric vehicles (EVs), with the release of the F3DM hybrid in 2008, and the e6, a pure electric vehicle, in 2010.

The company’s innovative spirit and unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability have been instrumental in their success. With the world’s largest EV battery factory, which opened in 2018 in the Chinese city of Qinghai, BYD is now the leading manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries.

Expansion

In 2016, BYD ventured into the monorail industry, unveiling the SkyRail, an urban transit solution aimed at easing traffic congestion and reducing air pollution. The SkyRail was first deployed in 2016 in the city of Shenzhen, and now serves as a model for other cities looking to implement sustainable public transportation solutions.

Today, BYD’s electric buses, taxis, and private cars can be found on roads across the globe, from Europe and North America to Asia and Australia. In the United States, BYD has established itself as a major player in the electric bus market, with its Lancaster factory in California producing electric buses for cities like Los Angeles and Long Beach.

One of the keys to BYD’s success has been its ability to forge strategic partnerships. Their collaboration with Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in 2008 helped propel the company onto the global stage, and they have since teamed up with industry giants such as Daimler and Toyota to further advance the development of electric vehicles.

Sustainability

In addition to its pioneering work in the transportation sector, BYD has been a key player in the renewable energy industry. Their solar panels, energy storage systems, and energy management solutions have contributed to the global shift towards clean and sustainable energy sources.

BYD’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in their corporate philosophy. The company follows a “Triple Green” policy, focusing on energy saving, materials recycling, and resource conservation throughout its manufacturing processes. This approach has been recognized internationally, with BYD winning the Zayed Future Energy Prize in 2016. They state a key corporate aim is to “Cool The Earth by 1℃”.

BYD’s electric cars

The company has a wide range of electric cars, from small hatchbacks to large SUVs. BYD’s overall electric car range includes the following models:

  • BYD Atto 3: A compact SUV with a range of up to 457 kilometers.
  • Dolphin: A small hatchback with a range of up to 402 kilometers.
  • Han: A mid-size sedan with a range of up to 521 kilometers.
  • Tang: A large SUV with a range of up to 402 kilometers.

BYD is also planning to launch a number of new electric cars in 2023. These include the following:

  • Seal: A mid-size sedan with a range of up to 570 kilometers.
  • Ocean-X: A large SUV with a range of up to 643 kilometers.
  • Han EV GT: A high-performance version of the Han sedan with a range of up to 472 kilometers.

BYD and Al-Futtaim, a leading distributor in the United Arab Emirates, are working together to facilitate the development of green travel in the country. Drivers in the UAE can now register their interest in the HAN and BYD Atto 3 models which will be available in the country during 2023.

As the world faces increasing pressure to curb greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, BYD’s commitment to sustainable transportation and renewable energy solutions is more important than ever. With a proven track record of innovation and growth, BYD is poised to continue leading the charge towards a greener, cleaner future in the UAE and beyond.
