Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the electric version of its iconic G-Class, known as the G 580 with EQ technology. It makes the move to electric while maintaining the model’s rich heritage. The G-Class, originally conceived for military use, now integrates state-of-the-art electric technologies to offer an environmentally-conscious option without compromising on the robust capabilities expected from Mercedes.
The G 580 EQ is equipped with multiple electric motors and a large lithium-ion battery, providing an impressive range of up to 473 km on a single charge. Despite the shift to electric propulsion, the vehicle retains its traditional ladder-frame construction, further reinforced to accommodate the new electrified components. This structure allows the G 580 to preserve its renowned off-road capabilities, which have seen enhancements in manoeuvrability and ground clearance.
Aesthetically, the G 580 continues to reflect the classic features of the G-Class, albeit with updates aimed at improving electric performance and aerodynamics. Notable is the black panel grille, subtly raised bonnet, and air curtains integrated into the rear wheel arches. Other modifications include new elements on the A-pillar and rear spoiler designed to optimise airflow.
The vehicle dimensions remain largely unchanged from its combustion counterpart, measuring 4.62 metres in length, 1.98 metres in height, and 1.93 metres in width. It maintains all-wheel drive, capable of traversing demanding terrains while showcasing distinctive new features such as an electric charging port and blue accents typical of Mercedes’ EQ line.
Inside, the G 580 EQ is equipped with the MBUX infotainment system, which is designed to seamlessly integrate advanced digital features aimed at enhancing the off-road driving experience. Luxurious appointments include a multi-function Nappa leather steering wheel, ambient lighting, and the renowned Burmester 3D sound system.
Launch of the G 580 also brings forth a special Edition One, which showcases an array of carbon-fibre components adorned with electric blue details, alongside top-tier features and premium finishes. With options like Keyless-Go, temperature-regulated cup holders, and a ‘transparent bonnet’ display system, the model offers a bespoke feel that can be further personalised through Mercedes-Benz’s Manufaktur programme.
The interior of the Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ
Powering the G 580 are four individually controlled electric motors, delivering a maximum output of 432 kW (588 hp) and an impressive torque of 858 lb-ft. The vehicle’s off-road gearing has been adapted for electric use, yet still includes a sophisticated system for individual wheel management. This system allows each wheel to be locked, freely rotated or have adjustable traction, catering to a variety of obstacles regardless of surface grip. The model is noted for its wading depth of 850 mm and has a lateral incline capability of up to 35° or 45° longitudinally.
Unique to the G 580 are features such as G-Turn and G-Steering, enhancing manoeuvrability in challenging environments, allowing the vehicle to pivot on its axis even on loose surfaces. Though the G-Turn feature appears more suited for entertainment than practical application, it does showcase the innovative engineering behind the G 580.
Additionally, the G-Roar sound system provides an acoustic experience reminiscent of the V8 engine found in traditional AMG models, adding a distinctive element to driving this electric SUV.
The G 580 features a battery capacity of 116 kWh, supporting AC charging at a maximum of 11 kW and offering rapid DC charging capabilities of up to 200 kW—the latter allowing for a recovery of 170 km of range in just 15 minutes. For performance, the G 580 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a brisk 4.7 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 180 km/h.
Ultimately, the G 580 with EQ technology seamlessly blends Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to electric mobility with the ruggedness and luxury synonymous with the G-Class. This model not only caters to environmentally-aware drivers but also maintains the high performance and classic design that loyal G-Class enthusiasts expect.
