Volkswagen has made headlines recently with the announcement of a new milestone in electric vehicle efficiency, successfully demonstrating the capabilities of its ID.7 pro S model. The vehicle achieved an impressive 941 kilometers on a single charge, significantly surpassing its stated range of 709 kilometers according to the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) standard. This record-setting feat highlights advancements in electric mobility and reinforces the model’s potential appeal for the UAE and Saudi Arabia, where journeys can require high range.
The record was set during a rigorous test conducted in December at Volkswagen’s renowned Nardò testing track in southern Italy. This facility features a 12.5-kilometer loop specially designed for high-performance vehicles. The ID.7 pro S clocked its astonishing distance while maintaining an average speed of just 29 km/h—representative of typical urban driving conditions during peak traffic.
Volkswagen engineers noted that the vehicle showed an average consumption rate of 9.2 kWh per 100 kilometers, equating to an impressive diesel-equivalent fuel consumption of under 1 litre per 100 kilometers. The endurance test lasted over 33 hours and concluded in the early hours of the third day, underscoring the vehicle’s long-range capabilities.
While the performance figures are noteworthy, the conditions under which this record was achieved may present challenges for regular drivers looking to replicate the success in everyday scenarios. The controlled environment, including ambient temperatures between 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, played a crucial role in optimising battery performance.
Volkswagen’s ID.7 pro S is designed primarily as a touring vehicle, making it well-suited for families, business users, and those who frequently embark on long-distance journeys. The model boasts highly efficient aerodynamics with a low drag coefficient of 0.23, alongside an advanced APP550 drive system featuring a rear motor that delivers 210 kW (equivalent to 286 horsepower) and a peak torque of 545 Nm. This powerful setup allows the ID.7 pro S to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds.
Charging infrastructure is also a key consideration for potential EV owners. The ID.7 pro S supports rapid charging capability of up to 200 kW DC, allowing for an additional 244 kilometers of range to be added in a mere 10 minutes. Moreover, charging the battery from 10 to 80 percent takes approximately 26 minutes, enhancing the vehicle’s practicality for those on the go.
As electric vehicles continue to evolve and gain traction in markets like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, innovations such as those demonstrated by the ID.7 pro S contribute to the industry’s momentum. This model not only exemplifies Volkswagen’s commitment to electric mobility but also highlights the growing consumer interest in efficient electric vehicles capable of meeting diverse driving needs within the Gulf region.
