Lexus launches first ‘ground-up’ EV, the RZ 450e

Lexus has debuted its first vehicle designed entirely as an electric vehicle (EV), the RZ 450e. The new model aims to capture a luxurious and comfortable ride, embedding features that promise to keep long-term Lexus enthusiasts satisfied.

The RZ 450e stands out with its distinctive styling and a luxurious, well-appointed interior. At first glance, notable features include physical switchgear and paddles for regenerative braking, which offer a more traditional and tangible approach contrasted to the touch-sensitive haptics in many competitors.

The vehicle is powered by a 71.4 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed range of up to 271 miles. However, in real-world tests, it delivered an efficiency rate of approximately 4.0 miles per kWh, suggesting a potentially higher actual range. Charging capabilities are respectable, with a maximum charging rate of 150 kW, enabling a recharge from empty to 80% in around 30 minutes.

With twin motors providing a combined power output of 309 bhp, the RZ 450e’s performance is as seamless as its ride quality. Its dual-motor design allows for adaptable functionality, enabling front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive.

The RZ’s interior manifests luxury and comfort with a large 14-inch infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It includes practical touches such as knee warmers and a dimmable panoramic glass roof. The interior space is designed to cater to both drivers and passengers with ample room and thoughtful ergonomic details.

One innovative but controversial feature is the upcoming “One Motion Grip” yoke-style steering, set to be available in 2025. Although it’s intended to offer advanced steering dynamics, initial feedback indicates a steep learning curve without immediately clear benefits.

The RZ 450e is priced significantly higher than its closely related sibling, the Toyota bZ4X, and is likely to compete in the luxury EV market with cars like the BMW iX3 and Jaguar I-Pace.
