Jaguar Type 01 revealed in New York as the brand restarts

Jaguar unveiled the production Type 01 in New York last night. The four-door electric grand tourer is the first new Jaguar since the brand stopped selling new cars, and orders open early next year.

Jaguar revealed the Type 01 on 6 October at the Storied event space in West Chelsea. Before the reveal, the car drove on closed roads past displays in Times Square, Dumbo and the Lower East Side. Jaguar calls it the most powerful and most aerodynamic road car it has made. At the same event, it named actor Florence Pugh as its first brand ambassador for the new era.

The launch ends a long gap. Jaguar stopped selling new cars in the UK in November 2024. A month later, it showed the Type 00 concept at Miami Art Week.

Rawdon Glover, Jaguar’s managing director, said: “From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a luxury grand tourer for a new era. Type 01 is the foundation of this British brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to create objects of desire, just as it was in the days of the E-type and XJS.”

How powerful is the Jaguar Type 01?

Three electric motors drive all four wheels. A 260kW motor sits on the front axle, while two 310kW motors drive the rear. Combined output peaks at 757kW, or 1,015hp, with 1,365Nm of torque. That makes it the most powerful Jaguar road car yet. Jaguar claims 0 to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, and 100 to 180km/h takes a further four seconds.

When cruising or driving in town, the car disconnects its rear motors to save energy. In Dynamic mode, however, it can send up to 87 per cent of torque to the rear axle. Air suspension, rear-wheel steering of up to six degrees and a 50:50 weight distribution complete the chassis.

How far does it go on one charge?

The Type 01 sits on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture, which runs at 850 volts. A 118kWh battery feeds the motors. Jaguar quotes an estimated 400 miles in the US. At a steady 75mph, the company says the car covers about 320 miles.

Charging peaks at 350kW on a DC fast charger. As a result, a 10 to 80 per cent top-up takes 22 minutes, and 13 minutes adds around 200 miles. Many public chargers still run at 400 volts, so Jaguar has added split charging that accepts up to 250kW from those units. In North America, the car will also work with the NACS connector.

What does it look like?

The production car stays close to the Type 00 concept. It’s more than 5.2 metres long and 1.4 metres tall. Wheels are 21 inches as standard, with 23-inch options, and the drag coefficient is 0.23. There’s no rear window. Instead, a roof camera feeds a display at the base of the windscreen.

Jaguar calls the rear quarter pressing the Impossible Panel. Its sharp creases meet at a single point, and stamping it takes a six-stage cold-forming process.

Jaguar first showed the cabin in August. A central spine divides it into four individual seats. Behind the steering wheel sits a 24-inch OLED screen, while a 7-inch touchscreen on the console handles climate and media. The boot holds around 450 litres, rising to about 990 litres with the rear seats folded.

Why did the Type 00 cause such a stir?

Jaguar’s rebrand landed weeks before the concept, with a new logo and a launch film that showed no car. Online criticism followed quickly. When the pink Type 00 appeared in Miami on 2 December 2024, its bright paint and hard-edged shape divided opinion further.

Gerry McGovern, then Jaguar’s chief creative officer, addressed the reaction at the reveal. “Jaguar has no desire to be loved by everybody. It has already stirred emotions and it will continue to. Some may love it now, some may love it later, and some may never love it. And that’s ok, because that’s what fearless creativity does.”

That point is central to the relaunch. Jaguar is returning with one model priced above $130,000, so it needs a committed group of buyers more than broad approval. A design that some people dislike is part of that plan, although it also carries clear commercial risk.

McGovern left JLR at the end of March 2026 to set up his own consultancy. Even so, the Type 01 keeps much of his concept, including the bonnet strakes at the base of the windscreen and the missing rear window.

How much will it cost?

In the US, the Type 01 starts at $130,500. Jaguar hasn’t confirmed UK pricing yet. UK prices are expected to run from around £120,000 to more than £150,000 for heavily personalised cars. Orders open in early 2027, and first deliveries follow in the second half of that year.

Which cars will it compete with?

At that US price, the Type 01 costs a little less than a Porsche Taycan 4S. It’s also around $15,000 more than a Lucid Air Grand Touring. Jaguar wants to place the brand between premium makers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz and luxury names such as Bentley and Aston Martin. To support that move, it plans a range of high-margin electric models on the same platform.

Jaguar designed and developed the Type 01 in the UK, and it’ll build the car there too.
