Toyota’s hydrogen Hilux heads for Dakar

Toyota will race a fuel cell Hilux across Saudi Arabia at Dakar 2027. Its only emission is water.

Toyota Gazoo Racing has replaced the petrol engine of its DKR GR Hilux with a fuel cell system. The hydrogen Hilux, called the DKR GR FC Hilux, will run at the 2027 Dakar Rally. The event runs from 1 to 15 January. It enters the Dakar Future Mission 1000 class for experimental vehicles, which covers 13 stages and 1,000 competitive kilometres. The rally starts and finishes in King Abdullah Economic City. Engineers are working on a smaller fuel cell, better cooling and more durability. It is Toyota’s first use of a hydrogen fuel cell in motorsport.
