Abu Dhabi to install 1,000 new EV chargers

Abu Dhabi is accelerating its shift to cleaner transport with a major upgrade to its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. The emirate has announced plans to install 1,000 new public charging stations at 400 locations across the city, aiming to make EV ownership easier and more practical for everyone.

The project is being led by the Integrated Transport Centre, also known as Abu Dhabi Mobility, part of the Department of Municipalities and Transport. All stations will carry the Charge AD brand and will be delivered through public-private partnerships, covering everything from installation to maintenance.

Charging won’t break the bank either, tariffs are set at AED0.70 per kWh for AC chargers and AED1.20 for fast DC chargers. The unified pricing is designed to give drivers confidence and encourage more people to make the switch.

EV adoption in the capital is already on the rise. More than 15,000 electric vehicles were registered in Abu Dhabi in the first quarter of 2025 alone, up 60% from the same period last year. The emirate is targeting 50% electric vehicles on the road by 2040 as part of its long-term climate strategy.

“This investment shows how serious Abu Dhabi is about sustainable transport and smart mobility,” said Dr Abdulla Hamed Al Ghfeli, acting director general of Abu Dhabi Mobility, during the official announcement.

The plans go beyond just street charging. The emirate is also working with businesses to bring EV chargers to hotels, malls and other key destinations, making it easier to top up while going about daily life.

To support this rapid expansion, the Department of Energy has also updated its regulatory framework for EV charging infrastructure. The aim is to make sure all charging stations follow clear technical and safety standards, while helping the UAE stay on track with its Net Zero 2050 target.

The initiative comes at a time when the local EV charging market is heating up. ADNOC Distribution is expanding its own network of fast chargers, aiming to grow from 840 to 1,000 stations in the next five years. The competition is a sign of how fast the mobility landscape is changing, and how central charging access has become to the EV transition.

For Abu Dhabi, building a strong public charging network is key to keeping up the momentum. With more EVs hitting the road every month, this latest rollout signals a strong push to future-proof the city’s transport system; cleaner, smarter, and ready for what’s next.
