De elektrische pausmobiel van paus Leo XIV

As Pope Leo XIV commenced his papacy, a moment steeped in tradition and ceremony, the Pontiff made his entrance in the iconic popemobile, a vehicle that resonates deeply with both the Catholic community and automotive enthusiasts alike. This unique blend of faith and passion for automobiles has seen various manufacturers contribute to papal transport over the years, including Fiat and Toyota. However, the latest model chosen for this sacred role is an impressive Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ, equipped with an all-electric powertrain, reflecting a significant step towards sustainability.

The G-Class line from Mercedes-Benz is a staple of the brand, known for its rugged elegance and formidable presence. The recent iteration of the G580 EQ, introduced in 2024, embodies modern luxury and ecological consciousness. Starting at €142,000 in Germany, or approximately R$900,000, its exclusivity is underscored by the vehicle’s bespoke modifications tailored specifically for the Holy See. In a collaboration involving design teams from Austria, Germany, and Italy, the new popemobile took a year to perfect, embodying both tradition and innovation in its design.

Modifications to this model are substantial. It features a structural redesign that accommodates a comfortable viewing position for the Pope, who can now greet his followers more effectively through an elevated and heated seat. The SUV includes a retractable roof, allowing the Pontiff to communicate with the crowd while protected from the elements. The classic pearl white finish remains a hallmark of papal vehicles, and the addition of Leo XIV’s coat of arms signifies a fresh chapter in papal history.

Underpinning this vehicle’s exterior is a formidable powertrain that remains true to the original model. Four electric motors deliver an impressive 587 hp and 118 kgfm of torque, enabling the popemobile to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. Furthermore, the vehicle boasts a range of up to 473 km, making it practical for the extensive routes often required during public appearances. This commitment to electric mobility aligns with the Vatican’s vision of transitioning to a fully electric vehicle fleet by 2030.

Pope Leo XIV’s adoption of this eco-friendly transportation method continues the legacy initiated by his predecessor, who similarly utilised electric models during his papacy. This shift is not merely symbolic; it reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship that resonates with the Pope’s pastoral messages regarding sustainability and climate change. The Vatican has long championed such initiatives, signifying a belief that protecting the environment is a moral obligation as well as a global necessity.

As discussions surrounding ecological responsibility grow increasingly urgent, the Vatican’s move towards a sustainable transport fleet demonstrates leadership in integrating modern concerns with traditional practices. The electric popemobile not only serves its purpose of transporting the Pontiff but also amplifies the message of environmental consciousness, bridging the gap between faith and ecological stewardship in an era that demands action.
