Lexus to join three-row electric SUV segment with upcoming TZ

Lexus is preparing to enter the full-size electric SUV market with the all-new Lexus TZ — a three-row, all-electric model expected to launch in 2026. Building on the design language of the Lexus Electrified SUV Concept unveiled in 2021, the TZ aims to position the brand within a growing segment that merges electrification with family-sized practicality.

The move reflects a broader industry trend: while overall global EV adoption has been slower than initially projected, demand for large, versatile electric SUVs continues to gain ground. Vehicles like the Kia EV9 have already established a strong foothold in the three-row electric SUV market, offering a blend of range, space, and tech-rich interiors that appeal to family buyers — particularly in markets like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, where premium SUVs dominate the landscape.

A New Electric Flagship?

Though Lexus has not yet revealed official images or specifications, recent trademark filings for the names “TZ450e” and “TZ550e” suggest that the vehicle will launch in at least two performance configurations. The TZ450e is expected to feature a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive layout, while the TZ550e may include a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system for improved traction and power — similar to the approach seen in the Lexus RZ lineup.

An “F Sport” version of the TZ is also rumoured, likely offering sport-tuned suspension and unique styling cues to attract buyers looking for a more performance-oriented experience in an electric utility vehicle.

Shared Platform with Toyota bZ5X

The TZ is likely to share its platform with the upcoming Toyota bZ5X, a yet-to-be-released three-row electric SUV positioned under Toyota’s “Beyond Zero” EV strategy. This shared architecture should allow for cost efficiencies and scalability while offering the premium materials, ride refinement, and quiet cabin experience Lexus customers expect. Given Lexus’s strategy with the RZ450e — which shares roots with the Toyota bZ4X — this co-development is consistent with the group’s approach to EV rollouts.

The TZ will also serve as a fully electric counterpart to the recently launched Lexus TX, a three-row ICE and hybrid SUV based on Toyota’s Grand Highlander. This positions the TZ as a direct competitor to the Kia EV9, Hyundai IONIQ 7 (expected in 2025), and Rivian R1S — all of which target affluent families prioritising both interior flexibility and zero-emissions driving.
